Introduction
Horim Museum was founded upon the contribution of artifacts and funds made by Horim Yun Jang-seob (湖林 尹章燮, 1922-2016) with the vision to inherit and cultivate the cultural heritage of Korea and Koreans. Yun Jang-seob established the Seongbo Cultural Foundation in July 1981 and opened the Horim Museum in Daechi-dong of Gangnam-gu, Seoul in October 1982. Afterward, the museum moved to a new space in Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, in May 1999. In June 2009, the museum’s Sinsa branch opened its doors in the Horim Art Center in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, which is one of the centers of Seoul’s urban culture, to bring culture and arts closer to citizens.
Horim Museum houses around 19,000 items of cultural heritage, including ceramics, metalworks, woodwork, calligraphy, paintings, and historical records. Among these items, 62 artifacts are state-designated national treasures (8) and treasures (54), and 11 artifacts are tangible cultural heritages designated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Horim Museum’s collection is highly praised for its variety and quality and serves as important basic data for research on Korean art history. Since its opening, the Horim Museum has been continuously holding exhibitions under diverse themes that bring the spotlight on different items from its valuable collection to enhance the understanding of the beauty and value of Korean art. Horim Museum envisions becoming a future-oriented cultural space that shapes the culture and appreciation of art by continuously expanding its collection and holding meaningful exhibitions.
